Player Analysis
August 16, 2024
Zach Rizzuto

Being fantasy relevant on an offense with as many weapons as San Francisco has is a feat in and of itself, but being one of the most productive receivers in the entire NFL on a per-route basis - and mind you, on the same offense as Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle - takes a different kind of playmaker. Brandon Aiyuk did just that in 2023, posting the third-highest yards per route run (3.27) of any receiver to run 100 or more routes while also ranking 2nd in first downs per route run behind only Tyreek Hill. Aiyuk has out-targeted the other big-three playmakers in the 49ers offense (Deebo, Kittle, and CMC) in each of the past two years, but only by a small margin: he has yet to earn more than 115 targets or catch more than 80 passes in a season in his career. Despite an understandable lack of elite target volume, Aiyuk has relied on his elite efficiency to finish as a top-15 WR in PPR formats in each of the past two years... and that's with the 49ers ranking as a bottom-four team in pass plays run. In his current situation in San Francisco, Aiyuk is unlikely to break into the high-WR1 range he's clearly capable of achieving as a result of limitations in his environment. What complicates Aiyuk's fantasy prospects is his contract situation; he's currently holding out for a new deal, and he's officially requested a trade as of July 16th. There's no question that Aiyuk will continue to be productive as long as he's in the Shanahan system on a very good 49ers team, but the prospect of Aiyuk earning a full No. 1 WR workload elsewhere is an intriguing proposition, as well. Luckily for Aiyuk, he'll likely be a top fantasy pick regardless of where he ends up - his efficiency was so good in 2023 that he could afford to see a significant drop and still rank among the league's best in 2024. Just keep in mind that you'll likely be drafting him at his ceiling if he stays in his current situation with all the other playmakers around him.
