Godwin earned just three fewer targets than Mike Evans and actually caught four more passes than him, but that opportunity didn't translate proportionally into fantasy production with Godwin finishing as just the WR35 in PPR points per game (12.3). Part of the issue for Godwin was being in the same offense as the league's TD receptions leader; with Evans catching 13 of Mayfield's 28 touchdown passes last year, Godwin fell flat in that department with just two trips to paydirt on 83 receptions. But perhaps the most glaring issue he dealt with in 2023 was his alignment, specifically out wide. After running 60+% of his routes from the slot from 2019-22, Godwin was inexplicably shifted to the outside on 62% of his routes - a full 180-degree flip from what he had been doing in the offense up until this past season. While Godwin wasn't ineffective on the outside (1.78 yards per route run when lined up wide), his bread and butter is and has been in the slot where he averages 2.24 yards per route run. That higher rate on the outside could be to blame for Godwin notching just four WR2 or better finishes last season. Looking ahead to 2024, it seems like new Bucs OC Liam Coen views Godwin as the slot receiver he is, with him making note over the course of the offseason to get him more opportunities as Tampa Bay's Z receiver. Even with the role change last year, Godwin was still a very strong target earner after posting 22.7% target share and 0.25 targets per route run in 2023. Both those numbers ranked top-30 among 145 receivers to run 100 or more routes, making Godwin a strong value in what was a solid passing offense last year.
