Player Analysis

Zach Rizzuto

Gone are the days of Herbert pushing 700 pass attempts in a single season with head coach Jim Harbaugh around, who reined in his volume to a palatable 504 attempts in 2024 - the fewest Herbert has thrown in a season where he started at least 15 games. That resulted in a modest overall QB12 finish despite Herbert playing the cleanest football of his career (just three interceptions to go along with a 7:1 TD:INT ratio). The run-first philosophy of Harbaugh and OC Greg Roman could be even more prominent in 2025, with the Chargers' new two-headed monster of Najee Harris and first round pick Omarion Hampton leading a vastly upgraded backfield compared to last year. LA didn't completely fail to address the passing game outside of Ladd McConkey, though, grabbing Ole Miss standout WR Tre Harris to operate on the perimeter while McConkey guts defenses over the middle. As long as Herbert can be efficient on his attempts on what should be an improved offense (the Chargers ranked just below the league average in 2024 in points per game), Herbert's high end should remain in that mid-low QB1 conversation, with a floor that likely rests in the high QB2 range.
