Between horrific quarterback play and four missed games due to injury, Johnson plodded to his worst statistical season and lowest fantasy finish of his career in 2023. Of course, it's important to make the distinction that his low production had much more to do with missed opportunities than any kind of lack of opportunity - Johnson's 22.4% target share ranked 22nd in the NFL, while his 39.4% air yards share ranked 9th and his targets per route run checked in at a very healthy 0.25 (27th). And for as bad as the Steelers' offense was in 2023 - they scored the sixth-fewest touchdowns last year - Johnson still managed to check in at over 2.00 yards per route run, an indicator that Johnson is a refugee of a broken offensive system and not on a downhill slide towards being labeled as washed - Reception Perception would confirm that Johnson is one of the league's best separators. It's true, though, that Johnson has seen his numbers slip in two consecutive seasons since reaching the height of his fantasy career so far in 2021 with an overall WR8 finish, but 2023 marked a return to normalcy with him scoring five touchdowns one season after scoring zero on 147 targets in 2022. Now free of his shackles in Pittsburgh, Johnson finds himself in Carolina with a quarterback who still has a lot to prove; and while it's not a marked improvement on his QB situation for 2024, Bryce Young still has an element of unknown and untapped potential that new HC Dave Canales can hopefully coax out this season. Johnson profiles easily as the Panthers' No. 1 target over aging veteran Adam Thielen and new first round receiver Xavier Legette, making him a strong value in drafts with the upside to see 130+ targets coming off the board in the late-6th/early-7th round.
