Player Analysis
August 16, 2024
Zach Rizzuto
Even with up-and-down QB play from Justin Fields and a four-game cameo from undrafted rookie QB Tyson Bagent, Kmet had his most productive fantasy season of his career in 2023 while setting career highs in receptions and receiving yards, as well as tying for the 2nd-most touchdowns among TEs with 6. He ranked top-12 in nearly every relevant utilization metric last year, including target share (12th), air yards share (8th), targets per route run (11th), and yards per route run (7th) en route to nine weekly top-10 finishes. Kmet was especially useful in the red zone and in the end zone, amassing the second-most end zone targets of any tight end last season and tying for the league lead in TDs caught in the end zone with five. That role will be essential to maintaining fantasy relevance in 2024 with the Bears bringing in a truckload of target competition via the additions of Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze, both of whom profile as No. 1 options to go along with Chicago's 2023 target leader, D.J. Moore. With a shiny new quarterback in Caleb Williams and a faster-paced playcaller in Shane Waldron, Chicago will likely air it out much more in 2024 than the year prior - the Bears ran the 4th-fewest pass plays last year, while Waldron's Seahawks passed the ball at the seventh-highest clip. If the big three of Moore, Allen, and Odunze are all as advertised, Kmet could have a hard time earning consistent volume even if he's one of the higher end talents at TE, and he'll have to rely on efficiency to remain relevant as a potential Top-12 tight end. And while WIlliams is expected to be a considerable upgrade at quarterback for the Bears long-term, his rookie season isn't guaranteed to be sunshine and rainbows. That uncertainty under center, paired with substantial pressure being exerted by his fellow target-earning teammates, is likely to threaten Kmet's status as a fantasy TE1 in 2024 after back-to-back top-6 finishes in 2022 and 2023.
