Metcalf is an absolute specimen of a human being and a football player, but 2023 saw him relegated to the role of deep threat in a Seahawks passing attack that threw the ball at a significantly lower rate compared to the year prior. After earning a career-high 141 targets in 2022 with QB Geno Smith ranking top-6 in dropbacks with 652, D.K. Metcalf felt the squeeze on his opportunities in 2023; his 119 targets were the fewest he's had in a season since his rookie year. That's partially thanks to Geno Smith registering nearly 100 fewer dropbacks this past season than his breakout 2022 campaign, and partially thanks to the emergence of a third target-earning receiver for Metcalf to contend with in Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Tyler Lockett continues to not only beat the falling off allegations, but also prove that he's still one of the most productive pass catchers going into his age-32 season; he actually out-targeted Metcalf 118 to 114 and reeled in a whopping 13 more receptions (79 to Metcalf's 66). JSN also earned 93 targets of his own despite being utilized almost exclusively in the short passing game and around the line of scrimmage, with his 6.4 yard average depth of target paling in comparison to Metcalf's 13.8 yard aDOT. With all three receivers returning in 2024, it remains to be seen whether Metcalf will separate himself as the clear No. 1 in the Seahawks passing attack (his 0.23 targets per route run are very close to Lockett's 0.22 and JSN's 0.21) - however, with new OC Ryan Grubb at the controls, a higher-volume passing offense closer to what we saw from Seattle in 2022 could boost Metcalf's and the rest of the WR room's overall opportunity share. Metcalf's talent hasn't gone anywhere (his 2.22 yards per route run rank inside the top-24 among WRs to run 100 or more routes), but a general reliance on deep targets has kept his target share (20.7%) in the WR3 range and his weekly production volatile. If Metcalf can bring his overall target share up from 20% to the 22-23% range or better, he'll have a solid chance to crack the top-15 in PPR points per game after a WR22 finish last year, and it's very possible we see that happening. Grubb has experience with three good WRs in Washington, but the best receiver (Rome Odunze) was fed.
