D.J. Moore might not have been able to save Justin Fields' career in his lone season with the Bears, but the trade out of Carolina to Chicago may very well have saved his. Even with Fields and undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent ranking outside the top-30 QBs in PFF passing grade, Moore was able to set new career highs in receptions (96), receiving yards (1364), and touchdowns (8). He was the focal point of a Bears passing attack that would have lacked teeth without him in 2023, commanding an elite 25.9% target share (12th among WRs to run 100+ routes in 2023) and 42.2% air yards share (5th) that he turned into a highly productive 2.46 yards per route run (13th). That type of utilization, however, may not be attainable for a second year in a row with the Bears making dramatic upgrades to their wide receiver corps this offseason. Where Moore enjoyed minimal target competition in 2023 (the only other Bears pass catcher to have a target share over 12.5% was Cole Kmet) there is now more than he's ever had to contend with in his career. Keenan Allen (one of the league's premier target earners himself) and ninth-overall selection Rome Odunze earned 30.7% and 24.5% target shares in their respective offenses in 2023, which will make Moore's job of earning targets much more difficult in 2024. That being said, it should not be misconstrued that Moore has needed to rely on a lack of competition to earn his targets - his 752 targets since entering the NFL in 2018 are the 7th-most of any receiver in that time frame. While Moore is unlikely to eclipse his 2023 WR9 finish in PPR points per game in 2024, he should be a mainstay in the WR2 conversation with Caleb Williams under center.
