Player Analysis
August 16, 2024
Zach Rizzuto
In five games with Deshaun Watson under center in 2023, Njoku was caught up in mediocrity as nothing more than a fantasy TE2; his 8.5 PPR points per game would have ranked him as the overall TE16 on the year last season. That meager production came off just a 15% target share and just 0.17 targets per route run, both numbers that fall well short of the TE1 thresholds we like to see. However, injuries to Deshaun Watson forced Joe Flacco to come in at QB - a change that proved to be the key to unlocking not only Davdi Njoku's upside, but the entire offense's, as well. In five games with Flacco under center (Weeks 13-17), Njoku transformed into the NFL's premier threat at the position: his 18.2 PPR points per game ranked second in that span behind only Evan Engram (18.4), his target share jumped to second among qualifying TEs (21.7%), and his yards per route run (2.48) paced the position, as well. To finish as the overall TE6 given the revolving door at quarterback last season in Cleveland is a feat in itself, and while Njoku's numbers with Watson aren't earth-shattering like they were with Flacco, a little consistency could go a long way for Njoku in 2024 on the heels of his best statistical season yet. The Browns ran the most offensive plays overall last season, which is always a good thing in fantasy land - more plays equals more opportunities to score points, and with Nick Chubb potentially missing the first few games of the season, the Browns could turn to their $230M quarterback to air it out a bit more this season. The addition of Jerry Jeudy to the offense could affect Njoku's target share moving forward, but it's unlikely that he's ever fully unseated from his spot as the No. 2 option in the offense. As has been the case since Watson signed there, Njoku's ultimate fantasy ceiling will depend on which version of Deshaun Watson we get this season. Anything a shred close to what we saw from Watson in his days in Houston would be enough for Njoku to safely rank among the league's low TE1s heading into 2024.
