While Olave was able to build on his 72-1042-4 line from his rookie year with an 87-1123-5 line in 2023, it wasn't exactly the breakout jump in terms of production that fantasy managers had hoped to see with Derek Carr stepping in at QB for the Saints. His 137 targets on the season with Carr at QB were somewhat disappointing considering Carr had peppered his former WR1, Davante Adams, with 180 targets in 2022. Nonetheless, Olave ranked among the league's best in terms of utilization - his 23.7% target share, 39.2% air yards share, and 0.27 targets per route run all ranked within the top-15 of receivers to run at least 100 routes. Competing with Alvin Kamara for touches in the receiving game was a frequent issue for Olave, with Alvin Kamara posting a ridiculous 0.34 targets per route run to go along with an 18% target share in 2023. It also didn't help that Carr checked in with the 3rd-highest checkdown rate among QBs with 200 dropbacks (13.5% of attempts). With Carr returning in 2024, Olave will have the opportunity to enjoy continuity under center for the first time in his career; it's a different story at playcaller, though. Klint Kubiak enters as the Saints OC and brings with him a similar offensive scheme to what New Orleans ran in 2023 - the Saints passed the ball at the 10th-lowest rate in 2023, and Kubiak's last stint as OC with the Vikings saw him field an offense that passed the ball at the 12th-lowest rate in 2021. Michael Thomas is gone after earning a respectable 16% target share in his nine starts last year, but as long as Kamara is around and Derek Carr plays like Derek Carr, Olave profiles as a low-WR1/high-WR2 who will likely struggle to break into the mid-high WR1 territory.
