Zach Rizzuto
It took Rice until after the Chiefs' Week 10 bye to finally earn a full time role in the offense, but once he got it, he didn't look back. From Weeks 12-17, Rice ranked 11th in target share, 10th in targets/route run, and 9th in yards/route run, which allowed him to be the WR6 in PPR FPPG during this span. Through his final 11 games of the season, including the playoffs, he earned 8+ targets in eight of them while operating (frankly) as the Chiefs' only viable receiving threat not named Travis Kelce. His 2.62 yards per route run ranked 11th in the NFL among qualifying wide receivers, and heading into the 2024 season, Rice would be a locked-and-loaded late-2nd round/early-3rd round pick if not for his unfortunate legal situation. While no formal suspension has been handed down just yet by the league, the anticipation is that Rice will miss significant time in 2024 after making a name for himself both in real life and in fantasy land. My guess is that the suspension will be no longer than six games, which completely justifies targeting Rice at his current ADP for the upside he presents when on the field. There are other variables in place in 2024, though; there were high-speed additions to Mahomes' supporting cast this offseason, including acquiring Marquise Brown (4.27 40-yard dash) via free agency and selecting Xavier Worthy (record 4.21 40) in the first round of this year's draft. Amid all of the uncertainty with Rice's 2024 season, one thing is certain: his mettle as a target earner will be tested with much stiffer competition to fight off. He does have familiarity and an obvious rapport with Mahomes to fall back on, but like a long distance relationship, the easiest way to prevent a fallout is to not be apart in the first place. Rice's fantasy managers will have to stomach the risk of him A) missing games due to suspension and B) potentially lose his positioning as the No. 1 receiver as a result of that time missed; however, Rice's talent hasn't disappeared overnight and he could reasonably be in the discussion as a league-winner by midseason assuming his legal situation is sorted out sooner rather than later.
