Player Analysis
August 16, 2024
Zach Rizzuto
The cardio king of the NFL last year, Wilson led the league in route participation (91.1%), total routes run (634), and air yards share (45.8%) despite MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers going down four plays into the season. That resulted in a second straight-year of replacement level QB play for the 2022 first round pick, who garnered targets at an elite level (27.1% target share, 9th among WRs to run 100+ routes) but predictably struggled on a per-route basis, posting just 1.64 yards per route run (53rd). Of course, having just 67% of his passes qualified as catchable (per FantasyLife) didn't help Wilson's cause, and despite the clear shortcomings under center in New York, OC Nathaniel Hackett called one of the most pass-happy offenses in 2023 (the Jets ran the 5th-most pass plays in 2023). With two 145+ target seasons under his belt, it's clear that Wilson has no issue creating opportunities for himself - the issue has been the quality of those opportunities, and when Zach Wilson is your primary starter, good looks are likely to be few and far between. The Jets brought in veteran wide receiver and certified jump ball guy Mike Williams on a one-year deal while also drafting the pinball out of WKU, Malachi Corley, in the third round of this year's draft. The competition for targets will be something Wilson hasn't had to deal with since his days back at Ohio State, but Wilson has the draft pedigree, target earning ability, and chip on his shoulder necessary for a true breakout in 2024 with Aaron Rodgers under center. Further good news is that the Jets now have a viable backup in Tyrod Taylor, who is actually a huge upgrade to any QB the Jets had tossing the rock last year. The funnel that went towards Davante Adams in this exact offense will be now going towards Garrett Wilson. Enjoy.
