Player Analysis
August 16, 2024
Zach Rizzuto
When the Raiders drafted Bowers 13th overall a few months back, the immediate question was obvious: what happens to Michael Mayer, and is he going to cut into Bowers' workload in his rookie year? Going into year two, Mayer is already a relic of a past regime - however, the Raiders selection of Bowers likely had less to do with any disdain towards Mayer than it did with all of the quarterbacks they were eyeing being off the board by the time they were on the clock. At that point on draft night, the Raiders likely viewed Mayer as the top player on their draft board and went best player available (as you should in your fantasy drafts, by the way). When the rubber meets the road for the 2024 season, Mayer and Bowers are likely to play different roles within the Las Vegas offense - Mayer as more of a traditional in-line TE (where he played most of his snaps at Notre Dame) and Bowers as a chess piece/slot TE (where he played most of his snaps at Georgia). Unfortunately for Mayer, Bowers profiles as the more dynamic receiving threat between the two tight ends, and he's most likely to be the one competing with WR Jakobi Meyers (who's no slouch, by the way) for the No. 2 spot in the pecking order behind Davante Adams. Bowers is a generational prospect as we already know and have heard plenty of times throughout the draft process, and the Raiders are likely to find ways to utilize him in more ways than just throwing him the ball. However, a potentially limited role on an offense with two proven target earning receivers and a less than stellar quarterback situation could make it difficult for Bowers to produce off the bat in year one. He's an excellent long-term asset (i.e. in dynasty leagues), but his short term range of outcomes - especially this year alone - tops out in the mid-to-low TE1 range.
